Wayne Yates, born on August 1, 1958, to Lonny and Juiance “Mother” Yates in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma peacefully passed away on June 12, 2026 at the age of 67. A man whose life was marked by devotion, joy, and a free spirit, Wayne leaves behind a legacy cherished deeply by his family and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Wayne was a proud member of the Air Force, a chapter of his life that he held in great esteem. Following his service, he found fulfillment in his work as a maintenance man at Windpoint Park. Yet, it was his love of painting that truly brought him joy, a craft he pursued with passion and skill throughout his life.

He was a wonderful man—kind, funny, competitive but loving. A dependable soul, Wayne lived his life freely, embracing each moment with calm and collected confidence. His personality was a blend of warmth and humor; he had a lighthearted way of putting guests at ease, often joking as he walked them to the door that he was making sure they left. To his family and friends, he was known as a Freebird who was happy and lived life on his own terms.

Wayne's fondness for the simple pleasures was evident in his love for food, especially blackberry cobbler, meatloaf, and fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden—treats he famously coaxed from his sisters, all seven of whom loved and cherished him deeply. He had a playful spirit and was particularly talented at horseshoes, where a double ringer earned him the right of some boastful teasing, bringing smiles all around. Alongside horseshoes, he enjoyed playing quarters and all manner of games with his family, fishing, and spending tranquil days on the lake in his boat, creating lasting memories with his loved ones.

Motorcycles were another great passion of his; he delighted in taking family and friends out for rides, sharing the thrill and freedom that the open road offered.

Among Wayne’s proudest accomplishments were his family, his military service, and his artistry as a painter. Perhaps most dear to his heart was his marriage to Brenda on April 28, 1999; she was the love of his life, and together they shared a bond that was a source of great happiness.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Yates; children, Shalako Yates, Joshua Weathers, Miranda Frazer; grandchildren, Logan Lawerence, Michael Frazer Jr., Colton Frazer, Braden Frazer; sisters, Bonnie Jacks and Jim, Kay Sheridan and Ronnie, Carol Erickson and Ricky, Mary George, Rose Crain, Juanita Parker and Donald; nieces and nephews, Jessie Hailey and Everett, Clifford Parker, Laura Dunbar as well as many numerous other nieces, nephews that he loved.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lonny and Juiance “Mother” Yates; sister, Connie Dunbar and brothers-in-law, Jimmy Dunbar and David Smith.

Wayne Yates was, at his core, an overall good person—a man who touched many lives with his kindness, humor, and gentle strength. He will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered for the fullness of the
