Obituary

Vickie Pierce, who made her home and her heart known in Rains County, passed away on October 14, 2026, at the age of 79.

Born on January 28, 1947, in Terre Haute, Indiana to Burford and Ruth Gilbert, Vickie lived a life marked by kindness, devotion, and a genuine love for others. She loved and cared about everyone around her. To so many, she was simply “Nana,” a name that reflected the warmth, comfort, and affection she shared so freely.

Education and teaching were important parts of Vickie’s life. She attended Indiana State University and went on to become a teacher at Rains ISD, where she taught reading for 25 years.

In 1991, Vickie moved to Rains County with her husband, Jerry Pierce, and made it their home. They spent 55 wonderful years together and built a life centered on family, friendship, and simple joys. She loved reading and enjoyed going out with her friends. She also treasured time with her family, especially fishing and sharing adventures together.

Some of the happiest memories of Vickie are tied to the water. She loved going fishing with her family at White River, and it was easy to picture her on the boat, peaceful and content, reading a book between casts. Those moments captured so much of who she was: thoughtful, joyful, and happiest when surrounded by the people she loved.

Nothing meant more to Vickie than her children and grandchildren. They were her proudest accomplishment and the greatest joy of her life. She loved watching her grandsons, Gavin and Carson, play baseball, cheering them on with pride and love. She was especially proud of her granddaughter Joslyn and cherished watching her grow into an amazing young woman and mother.

Vickie survived by her son, Clayton Pierce and Jolee; daughter in law, Dori Pierce; grandchildren, Joslyn Varela and Alex, Gavin Pierce, Carson Pierce and great grandson, Atlas Varela.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Jerry Pierce; son, Jason Pierce and parents, Buford and Ruth Gilbert (Crynes).

Vickie will be remembered for the love she gave, the lives she touched as a teacher, and the gentle, caring spirit that made others feel seen and valued. Her memory will live on in the classroom lessons she taught, in family fishing trips and adventures, and in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
