Vergel Francis Burress, a devoted family man, proud Vietnam veteran, and a man whose warmth and humor touched all who knew him, passed away on May 10, 2026. Born on January 14, 1938, Vergel lived a life rich with service, passion, and joy.
A native of Texas, Vergel graduated from Raymondville High School in Willacy, TX, in 1955, where his classmates playfully voted him most likely to see an alien—a testament to his outgoing and imaginative spirit. After high school, he worked for the highway department until answering a higher call when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in March 1960. Vergel’s military career was distinguished and honorable, serving 22 years and 18 days, retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) in 1982. He took immense pride in his service, especially his role as the leader of all Air Force electronic laboratories in Europe, and his time at the Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory (PMEL) in Ramstein, Germany. His final stationing was at K.I. Sawyer AFB in Michigan. Being a Vietnam veteran was a significant chapter of his life, one he carried with reverence and humility.
After his military retirement, Vergel embarked on a journey of exploration across the United States before beginning his second career at Tucker Electronics in Garland, Texas. When he finally retired from Tucker, he embraced the next two decades living his dreams—traveling abundantly with his family, tending lovingly to his gardens, woodworking, golfing, hunting, fishing, and spending joyous time engaging in board games, cards, and farkle with loved ones.
Family was at the core of Vergel’s world. One of his fondest memories was marrying his beloved wife Anita in their home in Sachse, Texas on August 3, 1991—where he poured his heart into crafting the beautiful stained oak cabinets, turning their house into a warm haven. The birth of his son, Vergel Burress II, brought immeasurable joy, and he was also a proud stepfather to three stepsons. He loved his six grandchildren deeply, whose lives he enriched with stories, laughter, and gentle guidance.
Known for his outgoing nature, intelligence, and wisdom, Vergel was unforgettable in his presence. He loved to tell stories, sing, laugh, and share jokes—qualities that endeared him to his church family. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and his favorite hymn, "How Great Thou Art," was emblematic of his heartfelt devotion to God.
Vergel is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Anita Burress of East Tawakoni, TX; son, Vergel Francis Burress II of Garland, TX; stepsons, Jared and Tiffany Moore of Midland, TX, Nathan and Christie Moore of Farmersville, TX, Lyndsey and Michelle Moore of Lavon, TX; grandchildren, Caleb and Brayden Moore, Hunter and Amber Moore, Kara and Colton Moore; siblings, Zelda and Kenneth Stewart of Kerrville, TX, Allen Burress of Azle, TX, Lou Lou Galmiche of Fulshear, TX; brother in law, Wayne Foster of Cedar Hill, TX, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family.
He is preceded in death by, his mother and father, Lola Francis and Vergel Alvie Burress and siblings, Bobby Burress, John Burress and Louise Huddleston.
