Thurman Dale Simmons, lovingly known by many as Pop, Bubble Gum Pop, T.D., Little Pop, Woodrow, and PeeWee, passed away peacefully at his home in Alba, Texas, on June 16, 2026, at the age of 93.
Born on March 29, 1933, in Honey Grove, Texas, Thurman lived a life filled with hard work, laughter, music, family, and friendship. He proudly served his country in the Texas Army National Guard from 1956 to 1962. Following his military service, he dedicated many years to the City of Dallas, where he retired as a Lead Man.
In 1953, Thurman married the love of his life, Virginia Taber Simmons. Together they built a family and shared many years of love, devotion, and treasured memories.
Thurman enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He loved fishing, drinking a cold beer, and especially playing dominoes—particularly the game of 42. If you happened to beat him, you just might have a domino headed your way. He had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to tell stories, and never met a stranger. His laughter and larger-than-life personality left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Music was one of Thurman's greatest joys. He loved singing "Hey, Good Lookin'" and especially "You Are My Sunshine," songs that will forever remind his family and friends of the happiness he brought into their lives.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia Taber Simmons; his parents, Logan Simmons and Susanna Perkins; his brother, Larry Butler; his son, Roger Dale Simmons; his daughter-in-law, Patricia Simmons; and his great-grandchildren, John, Logan, Steven, Tabitha, and Richie.
Left to cherish his memory are his sister, Helen Sanders and her husband, William Sanders; his son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Debbie Simmons; his son, Bobby Simmons; his son, Danny Simmons; and his daughter, Laura Mares. He also leaves behind 16 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, 32 great-great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends whose lives were blessed by knowing him.
Thurman's legacy lives on through the generations of family he loved so dearly. He will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his strength, his humor, his singing voice, his love of dominoes, and the countless memories he created throughout his 93 years.
Though he has left this earthly home, his love, laughter, songs, and stories will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him. Though he is gone from our sight, he will never be gone from our hearts.
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine..."
