Sally Mace, a beloved mother and a devoted Christian, passed away on March 9, 2026, at the age of 86.
Sally was born on October 18, 1939, to Edwin and Eleanor Cunningham in McKeesport, PA. Sally dedicated her life to serving her husband, her family, and her church. Growing up, Sally’s family moved frequently due to her father’s job in the aerospace industry. She had fond memories of adventures with her sister Nancy and their pets. Nancy and her husband Phil introduced her to the love of her life, Carl Mace, on a blind date. They were soon after, married. Together they had 4 children Debbie, Carl, Juli, and Steve.
Sally, Carl, and their children lived in Ohio and were members of the Akron Baptist Temple until they moved to Texas in 1988. After moving to Texas, they became members of the First Baptist Church of Heath, where they attended, served, and worshipped for many years before moving their membership to the First Baptist Church of Rockwall. Sally sang in the choir, counted tithes and offerings, and even worked in the sound booth to help out in whatever way she could. In addition to her service to the church, she was also faithful to attend her Sunday School classes.
Carl and Sally were inseparable and unwavering in their devotion to one another. They enjoyed singing in choirs together, travelling (especially their yearly wildflower trips), date nights to The Gospel Jubilee, and just generally being together in whatever they did. Sally was an excellent cook and Carl was her best customer. Sally notoriously went all out for the holidays and the table was always overflowing with delicious offerings. She always made sure each family member’s favorites were on the table.
Sally was a homemaker and could often be found cooking, decorating cakes, and working in her gardens. Her past times included crafts as well as her gardening and had a particular fondness for sewing and painting. She was an avid bird enthusiast. Her favorite birds were owls, a preference no doubt passed down from her mother. Sally decorated her home with an extensive collection of bird figurines and décor that even chimed on the hour with the sounds of birds.
After Carl’s passing, Sally moved to Wesley House Quitman. She made friends with other residents and was beloved by the staff who loved her and cared for her like family.
Sally loved her family and her legacy of love will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Sally is survived by her children, Debbie Phillips and husband James, Juli Garner and husband Joey, and Stephen Mace; grandchildren, Troy Ruetz, Chelsea Ruetz, Colten Garner, Jolee Poteet and husband Wyatt, Josee Garner, Jayson Garner, Jayci Garner, Azure Alicandro-Mace, and Cedar Alicandro-Mace; great-grandchildren, Maci Ruetz, Lukas Ruetz, Liam Phillips, and Yuri Phillips; sister, Nancy Yuschak and husband Phil. As well as several beloved nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Carl Luther Mace Jr.; son, Carl Luther Mace III; parents, Edwin and Eleanor Cunningham. We know a great reunion is happening and many stories are being shared with those that have gone before her as they spend eternity with God in heaven.
As we remember Sally Mace, we celebrate a kind-hearted woman whose life was defined by her unfailing love and devotion to her husband, dedication to her family, and to her church and faith. She leaves behind a family that will forever hold her memory.
John 16:22 “Therefore you too have grief now; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.”
