Joan Avery passed away on November 4, 2026, at her home in Rains County, surrounded by her family, leaving behind a legacy of love. Joan was born on May 13, 1939, in Dallas, Texas to John and Opal Lee Fobes (Pickett). She was the embodiment of caring for others and was never afraid to show it. In every part of her life, Joan made the people she loved feel safe, welcomed, and cherished.

Joan worked some in retail, but the work that defined her life was at home. She devoted herself to being a mother, grandmother, and homemaker, and she took great pride in creating a safe place for her family. She was, a mother, through and through —steadfast in her care, generous in her love, and proud of the family that meant everything to her.

She also brought warmth and personality to everyday life. Joan was quick-witted and funny, with a way of making others smile and feel at ease. She loved to shop, finding the best deals and she loved animals, especially goats and dogs. She also found happiness in looking at and taking family photos, preserving the moments and memories that mattered most to her.

Joan is survived by her children, Susan Harrison, Erin Kirkland and Ricky; grandchildren, Jamie Johnson and Kevin, Jake Kitchens and Kristea Schwartz, Eric Kirkpatrick; great-grandchildren, Daniel Harrell and Dalton Harrell.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Opal Fobes.

Joan will be remembered for the love she gave so freely, the home she built with care, and the pride she carried for her family. Her life was a quiet but powerful testament to devotion, humor, and the enduring comfort of being deeply loved. Those who knew her will carry her memory with them always.
